Bird Sounds Interpretation Courses

Bird Sounds Interpretation Courses - Photo by Filip Tkaczyk"I came to this course for stretching my consciousness and awareness and got that and so much more...Alexia is so skilled and knowledgeable an instructor in Bird Sounds Interpretation (Bird Language). Her love for the work created such excitement and curiosity for the group!"
-Dale Rhodes

Practice activities that build greater sensory acuity, train the body to move gracefully and silently in the forest, and cultivate the ability to interpret predator disturbance patterns displayed in bird sounds and behaviors (bird language).

As the master tracker Olaus Murie wrote "One should always listen to the warnings of the birds." Learn to recognize the differences between bird sounds, such as calls and alarms, and a whole new world of awareness opens up to you.

Our Bird Sounds Interpretation Courses (Bird Language Courses)

Monthly Nature Talks at REI: Seattle
Many of the region's finest naturalists share their wisdom at REI in downtown Seattle. Bird Sounds Interpretation or related topics are often featured in these talks.

Bird Language Weekend - May 1-3, 2009
Gain a window into the world around you by being able to interpret bird sounds and behaviors! Is that bird call telling us they are going about their usual business--or that a bobcat is sneaking away? How do birds react differently to hawks and housecats? What are the universal characteristics of alarm calls, so that you can take your knowledge back into your home habitat?

NatureSkills Weeklong - July 12-18, 2009
Jumpstart your skills exploring the natural world with Wilderness Awareness School’s most experienced instructors as we learn fundamental tools for connecting with and studying nature. During the week-long course, your classroom instruction will be paired with mentored dirt time in the field where we take theory into practice; bird sounds interpretation, tracking animals, studying edible plants and wilderness survival skills, and exploring the natural world.

Kamana Home Study Course - At your own pace
The Kamana Naturalist Training Program is a comprehensive home study course that covers the naturalist background needed to engage in the wilderness arts, including bird sounds interpretation, wildlife tracking, traditional herbalism, wilderness survival and primitive living skills, and naturalist mentoring. Begin with Kamana One: Exploring Natural Mystery. During this short course you will experience two weeks of awareness exercises and six areas of ecological study using a field guide and audio series narrated by Jon Young. Begin to see the world through "native eyes."

Year-long Wilderness Course - The Residential Program - Sept. 2009-June 2010
Our core intensive course is nine months of thorough grounding in every aspect of our curriculum, spent as part of a supportive community of fellow learners. At the Residential Program, you will develop the eyes, the ears, and the awareness with which to help our culture move forward into the future in a healthy and sustainable way.
